Short answer: To write a resume in Pakistan, start by listing every job, project and certification in a master document, then cut a one or two page version for each application. Order it as contact details, summary, experience, education, skills. Write the summary last, turn every duty into an outcome with a number, match your job title to the advertisement, and save it as a text based PDF.
Most people write a resume in the wrong order. They open a blank document, start at the top with an objective statement, and try to be impressive before they have worked out what they actually have to say. That is why so many resumes read like a list of job titles with adjectives attached.
The order below is deliberately backwards from that. You gather first, you write the body second, and you write the opening last, because the opening is a summary of material that does not exist yet when most people attempt it.
How do you write a resume step by step?
- Build a master document first. Every job, internship, freelance project, certification, course, society role and volunteer position, with dates. This file is never sent anywhere. It exists so you never have to remember anything again.
- Read the job advertisement and take its nouns. The skills, tools and qualifications it repeats are what the role is screened on. Those words belong in your resume wherever they are genuinely true of you.
- Choose what to cut. Select from the master document only what supports this one application. Everything else is noise for this reader.
- Write the experience section. For each role, three to five bullets, each opening with a verb and closing on an outcome or a number.
- Add education, skills and certifications. Named tools rather than described abilities.
- Write the summary last, once you know which parts of your record you have chosen to lead with.
- Cut it to length. One page under about five years of experience, two beyond that.
- Proofread aloud, then export. A text based PDF, named with your name and the role, and check you can select the text.
If starting from a blank page is the obstacle, begin from a structured format instead. The Classic template handles the ordering so you only have to write the content.
What order should the sections go in?
- Contact details. Full name, city, phone, a professional email address built from your name, and your LinkedIn URL. No full street address.
- Professional summary. Three or four lines naming the role, your experience and one concrete result.
- Work experience, reverse chronological, most recent first.
- Education, which moves above experience only while you are a fresh graduate.
- Skills, technical and named, kept separate from a short list of soft skills.
- Certifications, with issuing body and year.
- Optional sections such as projects, languages, publications or volunteer work, included only when they earn their space for this role.
Two exceptions are worth knowing. Government applications need a full personal details block with CNIC and domicile, which a private resume should not carry. Gulf applications need a photograph, nationality and visa status. Both are covered in our guides to the government job CV format and the CV format for Gulf jobs.
How do you write the professional summary?
Write it about the job, not about your personality. Almost every weak summary describes character traits that every other applicant also claims, and none of them can be verified.
- Weak: “A hardworking, motivated and dedicated professional seeking a challenging position in a reputable organisation where I can utilise my skills and grow.”
- Strong: “Accounts officer with four years of experience in a three entity trading group. Handles the monthly close, payables of roughly 200 invoices a month and sales tax filing. Proficient in QuickBooks and Excel including pivot tables. Applying for the Senior Accounts Officer role.”
The second version names a function, a duration, a scope, two tools and a target role. Every item is checkable, which is exactly why it is persuasive.
How do you turn a duty into an achievement?
Ask what happened as a result, then attach the number you already know. Volume, frequency, team size, budget, accounts, tickets and time are all countable without inventing anything.
If you do not have a number, describe the scope instead. “Managed payroll for a 120 person factory” is specific. An invented percentage improvement is not, and it is the first thing an interviewer will ask you to explain.
How should you write the skills section?
Name tools, not qualities. “Good communication skills” appears on nearly every resume in the country and carries no information. The named software you can actually use is what gets you filtered in.
- Weak: “Proficient in MS Office. Good communication skills. Hardworking team player.”
- Strong: “Excel including VLOOKUP, pivot tables and Power Query. QuickBooks. SAP FICO at end user level. SQL for reporting queries. Urdu and English, fluent in both.”
Only list what you can discuss for five minutes. Interviewers routinely pick the least likely item in this section and ask about it, and a claim you cannot support costs more than the line was worth.
How do you tailor a resume for each job?
You are not writing a new resume each time. You are changing four things, which takes a few minutes once the master document exists.
- The job title line, matched to the advertisement. Internal titles do not travel, so if your company called you Officer Grade II and the post is Assistant Accountant, lead with the market title.
- The summary, naming that role.
- The order of your skills, so what the posting asks for appears first.
- Which bullets you keep under each job, promoting the ones that match.
Spell out abbreviations once where they matter, writing “Chartered Accountant (CA)” the first time, because a search for one form will not match the other.
How long should a resume be in Pakistan?
- Fresh graduate: one page. With no full time history there is nothing to fill a second page with except padding.
- Two to five years: one page, or two if the second is genuinely full.
- Five years and beyond: two pages.
- Academic, medical or senior project records: three pages, where publications or a project list justify it.
Never reduce the font size to force a longer record into fewer pages. It is immediately obvious and it makes the document harder to read, which defeats the purpose.
Does your resume need to pass automated screening?
If you are applying through a company portal, Rozee.pk, LinkedIn or Indeed, assume your file is parsed before a person opens it. That imposes a few hard constraints.
- One column, since two column layouts are the most common parsing failure.
- Conventional headings. Work Experience, Education, Skills. Not “My Journey”.
- No tables, text boxes or icons, whose contents are frequently skipped.
- Month and year on every role, because total experience is calculated from your dates.
- Contact details in the body, not in the page header, which some systems ignore.
- A text based PDF, never a screenshot or an image export.
The ATS Friendly template is built to these constraints, and our ATS resume format guide explains how to check your own file in two minutes.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- One resume sent everywhere with no change to the title line or summary.
- An objective statement instead of a summary.
- A photograph, CNIC, father’s name and marital status on a private sector resume, where none of it affects hiring and all of it takes prime space.
- Duties copied from the job description, which tells a reader what your title does rather than what you did.
- An unprofessional email address. Use firstname.lastname.
- Unexplained gaps. A single dated line about study, freelance work or a family break closes it.
- Exaggeration. Degrees, grades and employment dates are verified before an offer, and a correction at that stage ends the process.
- Typos. For most applicants the resume is the only writing sample the employer has.
What changes when you rewrite a resume properly?
- The reader can tell what you do, because the summary names a function instead of describing a temperament.
- Two candidates with the same title become distinguishable, because your bullets carry scope and outcomes.
- The file survives an upload field, so your experience reaches the search results a recruiter actually looks at.
Resume writing questions, answered
Is a resume the same as a CV in Pakistan?
In everyday use here the words are interchangeable and most employers mean the same two page document. The technical distinction, and when it matters, is in our guide to CV versus resume in Pakistan.
Should I include a photograph?
Not for private sector applications inside Pakistan, where it is unnecessary and hurts parsing. Yes for Gulf applications. For government posts, only if the prescribed form asks for one.
What if I have no work experience at all?
Put education first and count internships, freelance work, final year projects and university society roles as experience, with dates and outcomes. Our fresh graduate guide covers this in full.
Should I write my resume in Urdu or English?
English for almost all professional applications in Pakistan, including public sector posts, unless an advertisement specifies otherwise. Keep the English plain and short rather than formal and ornate.
Do I need a cover letter?
Send one when the posting allows it, kept to three short paragraphs: the role, the single most relevant thing in your record, and your availability. A generic cover letter adds nothing, so skip it rather than padding it.
How do I explain a career gap?
With one dated line stating what the period was: study, a certification, freelance work, caring responsibilities or a job search. An explained gap is read as a period. An unexplained one is read as a risk.
Can I use AI to write my resume?
Yes, for tightening language after you have written your own facts. A fully generated resume loses the specifics that distinguish you. Our guide to using an AI CV generator covers where the line sits.
How often should I update my resume?
Update the master document whenever something happens, not when you need a job. Adding a project the week you finished it takes two minutes. Reconstructing three years of work under deadline pressure is where detail gets lost.
Next step
Open a blank document and spend twenty minutes building your master file. Every role, every project, every certification, with dates and any number you can remember. You will use it for every application from now on, and the actual resume becomes an editing job rather than a writing one. Then pick one advertisement, cut a version for it, write the summary last, and export a text based PDF.
