Fresh Graduate CV Format Pakistan 2026: Tips and Samples

You have the degree, you have the transcript, and the Experience section of your CV is nearly empty. That is the real problem fresh graduates face, and it is a formatting problem more often than a qualifications one. Most CV templates are built for people with a work history and put Experience at the top, which is the worst possible order when you do not have one yet.

This guide covers how to structure a first CV, what counts as experience when you have not had a full time job, how to write a final year project properly, and the mistakes that cost graduates interviews.

Should education go above experience on a fresh graduate CV?

Yes. Your degree, institution and CGPA are your strongest evidence, and they should appear in the top third of the page where a recruiter actually looks. Putting an almost empty Experience section first draws attention to the thing you have least of.

Write education with the degree, institution, year and CGPA or division. Include your thesis or final year project title here, then expand on it further down. Many graduate and trainee programmes in Pakistan screen on CGPA before anything else, so make it easy to find.

What counts as experience when you have never had a job?

More than most graduates think. All of the following belong in the experience section, with dates and a one line outcome.

• Internships, including short ones. A six week placement at a bank or a software house is real work.
• Freelance and paid project work, including Upwork and Fiverr delivery.
• University society roles. Running an ACM or IEEE chapter event, managing a budget, or coordinating a team of volunteers are all transferable.
• Semester projects with an external client, which are effectively short consultancy jobs.
• Teaching assistant and lab assistant work.
• Volunteer work with a stated responsibility and result.

How do you write a final year project on a CV?

Give it the structure of a job: scope, tools, your specific role and the outcome. For most graduates the FYP is the largest piece of work they have completed, and it is usually described in one vague line.

That entry tells a reader the technology, the scale, the team context and what you personally owned. “Worked on a facial recognition project” tells them none of it.

How do you write a summary with no work history?

Write it about the job, not about your personality. Almost every graduate summary describes character traits, which every other applicant also claims.

• Weak: “Hardworking and motivated fresh graduate seeking a challenging position in a reputable organisation where I can utilise my skills.”
• Strong: “BS Computer Science graduate, CGPA 3.42. Built a final year project in React and Node handling 1,200 test users. Six week internship at a Lahore software house working on production bug fixes. Applying for an associate software engineer role.”

The second version contains a degree, a CGPA, a real artefact, a real placement and the role being applied for. None of it is opinion, and all of it is checkable.

How should a fresh graduate write the skills section?

Name tools and be honest about level. For a first job the named tools often decide the shortlist, because there is little work history to judge.

• Weak: “Proficient in MS Office. Good communication skills. Team player.”
• Strong: “Excel including VLOOKUP and pivot tables. Python for data handling at coursework level. SPSS for statistical analysis. AutoCAD 2D drafting.”

Do not claim a tool you cannot discuss. Interviewers for graduate roles routinely test claimed skills in the first screening call, and a claim you cannot support costs more than the line was worth.

What mistakes do fresh graduates make?

• One CV sent everywhere. At minimum change the job title line and the summary for each application.
• An unprofessional email address. firstname.lastname@gmail.com, not a nickname from school.
• Responsibilities instead of results. Even an internship can carry a number: entries processed, customers handled, reports produced.
• Ignoring automated screening. Most graduate applications go through portals. Keep it single column with standard headings.
• Typos. For a candidate with no work record, the CV is the only work sample the employer has. Read it aloud once before sending.
• No LinkedIn profile. Recruiters check. An empty or missing profile is a gap.
• A two page CV. With no full time history there is nothing that justifies a second page, and padding is obvious.
• Leaving out the CGPA when it is good. If it clears the usual programme thresholds, put it in the summary as well as the education section.

What changes when a graduate restructures their CV?

Graduates who start getting callbacks after a rewrite have not gained experience in the meantime. Three changes do most of the work.

• Education moves to the top, so the strongest evidence is read first instead of last.
• The final year project becomes a real entry, which gives the reader something concrete to ask about in an interview.
• Internships and society roles move into Experience, which turns an empty looking section into a short but genuine record.

What if my CGPA is low?

Leave it out and let your projects, internships and named tools carry the application. Do not inflate it. Transcripts are verified before an offer is confirmed, and a mismatch at that stage costs the job outright.

Should I include a photograph?

Optional for applications inside Pakistan and unnecessary for most. If you include one, use a plain background and formal clothing rather than a cropped social media picture. Leave it off entirely for applications submitted through portals.

Can I use this CV for a management trainee programme?

Yes. Graduate and trainee programmes screen on degree, institution and CGPA first, and all three sit at the top of this structure. Mirror the programme’s own wording in your job title line, for example “Management Trainee Officer”.

Do internships really count as experience?

Yes, and they should be written like jobs, with dates, a responsibility and an outcome. A six week placement described properly is worth more than three months described vaguely.

What if I graduated a year ago and still have no job?

Keep this structure, and fill the gap honestly with anything real: freelance work, a certification, a course, volunteer work or a personal project. An explained gap is far better than an unexplained one.

When should I stop using a graduate format?

Around two years of full time experience. At that point your job history is your strongest evidence and belongs above education. Move to the Modern or Classic template and reorder accordingly.
