Short answer: A resume is a short, targeted document of one or two pages written for a specific job. A CV is a complete record of your academic and professional history and can run much longer. In Pakistan almost every job advertisement says “send your CV” but means a resume, so for nearly all private sector applications you should send one or two tailored pages. A true long form CV is only needed for academic, research and some international applications.
Many Pakistani job seekers get stuck on this question, and the confusion costs them applications. The words are used loosely, advertisements are inconsistent, and advice written for American readers does not match how hiring actually works here. This guide sets out the real difference, what Pakistani employers expect when they ask for a CV, and when the distinction genuinely matters.
What is the difference between a CV and a resume?
The two documents differ on three things: length, purpose and how much they leave out.
- Length. A resume is one or two pages. A CV is as long as your record requires, and for an academic with publications it can run to several pages.
- Purpose. A resume is written for one job and leaves out anything that does not support it. A CV is a complete record, written once and updated rather than rewritten.
- Content. A resume carries a summary, relevant experience, skills and education. A CV adds the full academic history, publications, conference papers, research, teaching, grants, memberships and awards.
The simplest way to hold the difference in mind: a resume argues for you, a CV documents you.
Which one do Pakistani employers actually ask for?
This is the part most articles get wrong, and it matters more than the textbook definition.
In Pakistan, as in the UK, the Gulf and most of South Asia, the word “CV” is used for what Americans call a resume. A job advertisement on Rozee.pk that says “email your CV” is almost never asking for a six page academic record. It is asking for one or two focused pages.
So if you are applying to a private company in Pakistan, send a targeted one or two page document and call it your CV. Sending a genuinely long CV to a corporate vacancy is a common and avoidable mistake: the reader has a stack of applications and will not work through your full history to find the relevant part.
When should you send a long form CV?
- University or college faculty positions, where teaching record and publications are assessed
- Research posts, fellowships and laboratory positions
- PhD and MPhil applications, and most international scholarship applications
- Medical and clinical appointments where the full training record, rotations and certifications are reviewed
- Grant and funding applications
- Some roles at international organisations and NGOs, which often ask for a full history alongside their own form
For academic applications the Teacher Academic template is built for this, with qualifications placed above experience and a dedicated section for publications and training.
When should you send a resume?
- Any private sector job in Pakistan: banking, IT, sales, operations, manufacturing, retail, logistics
- Applications submitted through Rozee.pk, LinkedIn, Indeed or a company careers page
- Management trainee and graduate programmes
- Gulf applications, where employers want a short document plus personal particulars
- Any advertisement that specifies a page limit
For general Pakistani applications the Classic CV Template covers it, and it is free to start. If you are applying mainly through job portals, the ATS Friendly template is the safer structure.
What goes in a CV that does not go in a resume?
- Complete education history, including matriculation and intermediate with boards, years and results. A resume usually stops at your highest one or two qualifications.
- Publications and conference papers, in a consistent citation format.
- Research and thesis work, with supervisors where relevant.
- Teaching record, including courses delivered and students supervised.
- Grants, awards and scholarships.
- Professional memberships and committee service.
- Every position held, including short and part time roles, rather than only the relevant ones.
What should a Pakistani resume include?
- Contact details at the top: name, city, a professional email and a working mobile number.
- A professional summary of three or four lines that names the role you are applying for.
- Work experience, most recent first, written as results rather than duties.
- Education, with institution, year and division or CGPA.
- Skills, naming the software and systems you have actually used.
- Certifications with issuing body and year.
Personal details such as CNIC, date of birth, father’s name and marital status are traditional on Pakistani CVs but are only necessary when the employer asks. Government applications do require them, and the Government template carries the full particulars block along with the declaration those files expect.
What mistakes do people make choosing between them?
- Sending a long history to a corporate vacancy. The reader is scanning for fit, not reading a biography.
- Sending two pages to an academic selection board. Here a short document reads as an incomplete record and can cost you scored points.
- Using one document for everything. The fastest improvement most applicants can make is changing the summary and job title line for each application.
- Ignoring a stated page limit. If the advertisement sets one, it is part of the test.
- Assuming American advice applies. Guidance written for the United States often says never to use the word CV, which is simply wrong in Pakistan.
- Cluttered formatting. Whichever you send, a clean single column layout reads better to both people and screening software.
CV and resume questions, answered
Is a CV the same as a resume in Pakistan?
In everyday use, yes. Pakistani employers say “CV” when they mean a short targeted document. The technical distinction only matters for academic, research and some international applications.
How long should my CV be for a normal job in Pakistan?
One page if you have under five years of experience, two pages beyond that. Three pages is only justified for academic, medical or government applications where a complete record is expected.
Should I put my photograph on it?
Not required for most private sector applications in Pakistan. It is expected for Gulf applications, and the Gulf Professional template is built for that. It should be left off for Canada, Australia and the UK.
Do I need to include my CNIC?
Only when asked. Government applications require it. Most private employers collect it at the offer stage instead.
Can I use the same document for every application?
You can, and it will cost you interviews. At minimum change the job title line and the professional summary so the reader can see which role you are applying for.
What about applications to Europe, Canada or Australia?
Each market has its own convention and they contradict each other. Europe commonly uses the Europass format with a photograph and date of birth. Canada expects neither, and Australia expects work rights and named referees. Keep a separate version for each market rather than one file for all.
Which should a fresh graduate send?
A one page resume. With no full time history there is nothing to justify a second page. The Fresh Graduate template places education above experience, which is the right order before you have a job record.
Next step
For almost every job you apply to in Pakistan, the answer is a targeted one or two page document, whatever the advertisement calls it. Keep a full record of your history saved separately for the academic and research applications that need it, and build each application from that record rather than sending the record itself. Tailor the summary, lead with results, and keep the formatting clean.
